Onboard Programing
History will be brought to life as visitors step onboard and back in time to discover one of the world’s greatest harbors and explore the magnificent Hudson River. A trip aboard the SS Columbia will offer a wide variety of quality programs for children and adults that promise a fun and engaging educational experience. Educational programming will be dockside as well as excursion-based and designed by licensed educators to meet state grade-specific educational standards. Parents and teachers are encouraged to take advantage of the many exciting regional connections to art, literature, and the sciences. Adult activities will include lectures, concerts, theatre, dance performances, and guided tours with links to historic sites along the Hudson River Valley. The Columbia will have dedicated space for history exhibitions and art installations. Exhibits will illuminate the history of the vessel and the Hudson River Valley with focuses on the legacy of Robert Fulton and the Industrial Revolution and our changing relationship to the environment. Visitors will learn about the Hudson River School painters and the work of regional contemporary artists by sketching and water-coloring the same magical landscapes. Visitors are invited to watch the engineers operate the massive antique 1,200-horsepower engine and see first-hand how steam is generated and then converted to propulsive force, moving the vessel forward. Visitors of all ages aboard the Columbia will enjoy a memorable cultural experience that no film, photograph, or Web site could rival.
