The SS Columbia Project will have a significant arts component reviving a history of engagement between the arts, the Hudson River Valley, and Hudson River steamships. The arts will be an integral part of a visitor’s experience of the Columbia and will be integrated into the restoration of the vessel itself. The project is designed to examine and encourage the dialogue between art, the environment, and the reverence for nature’s beauty characteristic of the Hudson River School painters, while seeking to revive this dialogue with contemporary artists working in ways that are representational, abstract, or conceptual.
