Communities
New York City and the Hudson River Valley have a long history of attracting visitors with its vibrant, living waterfront culture and reputation as a gateway to America. The maritime heritage of our region is based on New York’s historical status as a leading seaport and center of commerce, as well as the international renown that the Hudson River Valley once enjoyed among travelers who celebrated the beautiful Hudson River as the “Rhine of America.”
The SS Columbia Project seeks to revitalize the waterfront communities along the Hudson River Valley and the New York Harbor by promoting smart sustainable economic growth through thoughtful non-automotive heritage tourism. The Columbia will also offer opportunities of communal growth by offering a shared “living room” for the communities of the Hudson River Valley allowing residents of the valley’s diverse communities to gather together in a relaxed atmosphere for public programming.
By offering unique new access to our waters and recreating a historic transportation link connecting New York City and the communities of the Hudson River Valley, the SS Columbia will recreate the historical experience of our waterfronts as a dynamic gateway to new and enriching experiences.
