The Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial Commission (HFCQC) is dedicated to creating a dynamic reconnection to New York’s navigational history, culture, and natural resources. Specifically, in 2009, the HFCQC will honor the 400th anniversary of the voyages of Henry Hudson and Samuel de Champlain, the first Europeans to sail the river and lake that now bear their names, and the 200th anniversary of the voyage of Robert Fulton, who inaugurated steam navigation on a commercial basis. The landmark passages were significant advances in the settlement and development of North America.
“The Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Commemoration Commission represents a unique opportunity to celebrate New York and America’s glorious past but it is also an opportunity to bring visitors to New York as they learn about our history and our heritage,” Senator Hillary Clinton said. “The Commemoration Commission will facilitate Hudson-Fulton-Champlain-related activities throughout New York and the United States. With a focus on heritage tourism and appropriate economic development, the Commission aims to provide a first-class visitor experience as well as a lasting legacy and long-term public benefit to the communities involved.”
The HFCQC will organize a variety of events for the year with communities, schools, museums, libraries and other cultural and civic organizations. From kayaking to hiking to exhibitions and festivals, the celebration will have something for everyone of all ages. The SSCP intends that the SS Columbia be present during the Quadricentennial symbolizing the contributions of Robert Fulton. The restored vessel will then come to serve as a lasting beneficial legacy of the celebrations, benefiting our river communities for generations to come.
