Progress !
On November 29 the crew from Signal construction boarded SS Columbia to begin the final phase of stabilization including shoring and reinforcing the superstructure and protecting the ship from the weather. A crew of skilled carpenters inspected the ship and began installing bracing and reinforcement where necessary. As a final step a new watertight membrane will be installed on her top deck to replace the old billboards which has been installed as a temporary protective measure. The Grand staircase is being reinforced and repaired allowing it to be used once again. On all Columbia’s decks non-historic additions food stands, duct work and storage lockers, dating largely to the 1960’s , are being removed, revealing Messrs. Kirby and Keil’s original design intentions. It is very exciting to see the ship looking better and happier than before…
